Stakeholders’ Engagement Meeting on Climate Change and Respiratory Health Impacts in Nigeria
24 Apr, 2024
The inaugural C2Rest stakeholders’ engagement meeting on climate change and health in Nigeria was held on April 23, 2024, at Shoregate Hotels, Ikeja, Lagos. A total of 42 participants attended, with a feedback survey conducted after the meeting.
Meeting Objective
The meeting aimed to introduce the bottom-up co-creation approach developed by the C2Rest Nigeria Study Team. This approach encourages stakeholders to identify, discuss, and propose solutions for climate change and respiratory health, considering local socio-cultural dynamics. With Nigerian cities, especially in Lagos and Ogun states, facing severe climate change risks, the goal was to engage stakeholders to define drivers of climate change and develop sustainable, community-owned solutions for long-term implementation.
Participants
Representatives from various ministries, local government authorities, academic institutions, private businesses, nonprofit organisations, community leaders, and traditional institutions attended. Stakeholders from Lagos and Ogun states participated in the discussions, providing valuable insights on the local challenges and opportunities for mitigating climate change.
Main Outcomes
The meeting successfully achieved its goal of fostering open discussions on climate change drivers, barriers, and solutions. Participants emphasized the need for accountable, measurable, transparent, and sustainable policies to address climate change impacts on respiratory health.
Follow-Up Agenda
At the end of the meeting, stakeholders provided feedback focusing on their experience with the event’s content, structure, and logistics. The insights gained will inform our research and future engagements.
